Elisha Barnes was the first Mayor of Prineville,
Oregon. His home still stands in Prineville today as a Historical Monument. Barnes Butte and Barnes Lake
are two of Crook County's beautiful scenic areas named for Elisha's family. Elisha's son, George Washington Barnes,
my husbands great-great- grandfather was one of the first attorneys to open practice in Oregon and was shot dead on the streets
of Canyon City a few years later. It is believed that the Barnes home in Prineville is haunted by Elisha's son, "Mossy",
who it is said, committed suicide in the home.
